Stress, Priorities & Lessons Learned
About Me
Hey there! I'm Matt Gilbert, and I've been passionately working in the software testing field for nearly a decade now. I earned my Bachelor of Science degree in Software Development from Western Governors University, and since then, I've had the opportunity to work in various industries like Government, Insurance, Startups, SaaS, and Healthcare, as well as contract work.
Throughout my career, I've gained extensive experience in a wide range of testing techniques, such as API testing, Integration, Performance, Accessibility, UI, Usability, Mobile, and Contract testing. In addition, I've honed my skills in Test Automation Framework development using languages like Java, C#, Typescript, and Python. You can find me on LinkedIn. Let’s connect!
Lately, I've been reflecting on the journey I’ve taken in my career, and while I am still young, I feel as though I’ve had a lifetime of experiences so far, both good and bad. I wanted to share my thoughts on some of the some of these things.
Embracing Self-Doubt in the Tech World
A common theme I’ve noticed spanning my career is the feeling of self-doubt. It's a feeling many of us will inevitably face in our careers. It’s important to remember, though, that everyone has these moments, and they will pass. It's even more important to remind ourselves of how far we've come since we started and where we are currently.
Each one of us is here for a reason, and our continued growth and achievements are a testament to our capabilities. Let's continue to lean on others for encouragement, share our vast pool of knowledge, learn from each other, and grow together!
Navigating Stress in Software Testing
Stress is no stranger to those of us working in the tech industry. Whether it's looming deadlines, demanding clients, or the ever-evolving nature of technology, stress can take its toll. I've been there, too. I've felt the pressure of delivering software or meeting critical project milestones. It's okay to acknowledge stress because it's a part of the journey.
One strategy that has helped me is time management. Creating a well-structured schedule and setting realistic goals can significantly reduce stress. Additionally, mindfulness practices, such as meditation or deep breathing exercises, can help calm the mind during high-pressure moments. Don't hesitate to reach out to colleagues and mentors for support; you're not alone in this journey.
Setting Priorities for Success
In the tech world, where the pace of innovation is rapid, setting priorities is crucial. It's easy to get overwhelmed by a never-ending to-do list. Over time, I've learned to identify and prioritize tasks effectively. Whether it's resolving critical bug fixes, improving test automation, or planning the next project phase, knowing what needs immediate attention can make a world of difference.
It's equally important to master the art of saying no when necessary. Setting boundaries and maintaining a healthy work-life balance is vital to prevent burnout. Prioritizing your well-being should always be at the top of your list.
Valuable Lessons Learned
My career has been a journey filled with ups and downs. Along the way, I've learned valuable lessons from both successes and challenges. Each project, each bug, and each client interaction has contributed to my growth.
One crucial lesson is that setbacks and failures are not roadblocks but roadbumps to success. They offer opportunities for learning and growth. It's important to remember that even the most accomplished professionals have faced moments of self-doubt. The key is to persevere and use these experiences to your advantage.
Take time to smell the roses along the way. It’s a journey of self-improvement. Ask yourself these questions as you see fit:
What more can I learn at this point in my career?
What are some areas where I can help others grow?
How is my mindset at this moment?
Mindset is such a fickle thing. It can both be a hindrance and an advantage. Learning how to control your mindset is a powerful tool that will help you in many different situations. Most, if not all of the negative thoughts that someone might have are internal and can be controlled. The sooner you recognize this, the easier it is to keep those thoughts silenced or transformed into positive reinforcement.
The Power of Community and Collaboration
A supportive community can make all the difference. Networking, attending industry events, and engaging with online communities can provide a sense of belonging and a wealth of knowledge. I've had the privilege of meeting inspiring mentors and role models who have guided me on this journey.
As we navigate our careers, let's actively participate in knowledge sharing and mentorship. Helping others not only benefits them but also boosts our own confidence and skills. Together, we can create a thriving community where self-doubt is just a temporary hurdle on the path to success.
